Lessons for El Paso's Tech Scene from Miami

First article based on H20's panels and talks on September 2024

Attending the H20 conference in Miami on the last Friday was an enlightening experience. I had the opportunity to sit in on a panel featuring industry leaders like Maurice R. Ferré, Manny Medina and Seth Cassel. The discussions centered around strategies and innovations that have been pivotal in Miami's tech ecosystem. What stood out was the emphasis on community impact and the role of leadership in fostering a thriving tech environment. This knowledge has inspired me to explore how similar ideas could be applied to benefit El Paso's community.

Understanding the Miami Model

Miami's journey to becoming a tech hub is marked by strategic vision and community building for many decades. Companies like INSIGHTEC and EveryMundo have played significant roles in this transformation. INSIGHTEC, led by Maurice R. Ferré, specializes in non-invasive surgical treatments using focused ultrasound technology, revolutionizing medical treatment approaches. EveryMundo, co-founded by Seth Cassel, provides digital marketing solutions for airlines, transforming customer engagement in the aviation industry.

Manny Medina's story is a testament to the power of visionary leadership and resilience. Fleeing Cuba with nothing, Medina's mother embraced the U.S. as a land for new opportunity. Later he started his career as a certified public accountant with Price Waterhouse before founding Terremark in 1980. As the former CEO of Terremark, Medina played a crucial role in shaping Miami's tech landscape. His company was acquired by Verizon Communications for $1.4 billion in 2011, marking a significant milestone in the region's tech history. Medina continues to influence the industry through Medina Capital Partners, investing in technology companies that drive innovation.

A crucial aspect of the Miami model is the commitment of successful companies and entrepreneurs reinvesting in the ecosystem. This cycle of giving back strengthens the community and attracts new businesses. Additionally, Florida's pro-business environment has been a magnet for companies seeking favorable conditions for growth and innovation.

Embracing Florida and the U.S. as the Land of Opportunity

Manny Medina's journey exemplifies the opportunities available in the U.S. His success story is a reflection of the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives in Florida, a state known for its supportive business climate. Medina's ventures, including Medina Capital, continue to foster innovation and growth in the tech sector.

Key Strategies for Startups in El Paso

  1. Leverage Cross-Border Opportunities: El Paso's proximity to Mexico is a significant advantage. Entrepreneurs should explore partnerships with Mexican people and companies to tap into the talent pool across the border.
  2. Foster a Collaborative Ecosystem: Miami's success is partly due to its collaborative tech community. El Paso can replicate this by creating platforms for networking and knowledge sharing.
  3. Focus on Niche Markets: EveryMundo's success in digital marketing for airlines demonstrates the power of focusing on niche markets. El Paso startups should identify underserved niches for specialized solutions.
  4. Embrace Innovation in Traditional Industries: INSIGHTEC's advancements highlight the potential for innovation in traditional industries. El Paso can encourage tech solutions in manufacturing and logistics.
  5. Cultivate Visionary Leadership: Visionary leaders have been instrumental in Miami's tech rise. El Paso needs leaders who can articulate a clear vision and inspire others.
